Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron is in talks over an £8million return to his former club Atlanta United.

Almiron joined Newcastle from Atlanta for a then-club record fee of £21m in January 2019.

Now, six years on, he could be set to go back to the club where he made his name.

Mail Sport revealed last month that there has been interest in Almiron from several overseas club.

Brazilian teams Santos, Palmeiras and Sao Paulo have all been monitoring his situation, while Olympiacos and MLS side Charlotte FC have also enquired about Almiron's availability.

But Atlanta are now trying to win the race for the signature of the 30-year-old winger.

Almiron has scored 30 goals in 222 appearances for Newcastle, and has been a regular starter in recent seasons.

However, he has fallen out of favour this term, with Eddie Howe preferring to use Jacob Murphy ahead of him on the right wing.

Almiron - who has a contract at Newcastle until June 2026 - has been limited to just one league start this season.

He has still remained in Newcastle's matchday squad throughout the campaign, though, and came off the bench in his side's 3-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday night.
